Keep fighting fit this Winter!

With days getting shorter and colder, the fight to keep fit and healthy is most certainly on.

Shorter days mean less sunlight and you guessed it, a reduction in that feel good hormone, serotonin, as well as an increase in melatonin (the sleep hormone).

Couple that with viruses being rife at this time of the year and the immune system being compromised by a constant switch from cold to central heated conditions and it all adds up to a feeling of lethargy and a craving for carbohydrates.

Thankfully these symptoms can be overcome by keeping your body in tip-top condition;

1. Short daily bursts of exercise will give you the injection of the happy hormones you need and give you natural energy, preventing unnecessary eating.

Try this express workout after a short warm-up.

2. Research suggests supplementing your diet with a multi-vitamin, high strength vitamin C (~1000mg) and vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin (no more than 25 micrograms) to keep your immune system strong.

3. Increase your intake of foods containing tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the production of serotonin which is plentiful in oats, dried dates, milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, poultry, sesame, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, bananas and peanuts.
